Robert Culp est né le 16 août 1930 à Oakland, Californie du nord. Son père, Crozier Culp était avocat, et sa mère, Bethel Collins, une authentique descendante de ces premiers pionniers qui ont traversé l'Amérique dans un chariot bâché à l'époque de la ruée vers l'or. Enfant très éveillé, doté d'un sens précoce du spectacle, le petit Robert organisait des spectacles de marionnettes pour les enfants du quartier dans le sous-sol familial.
Dès l'âge de 14 ans, Robert commence à faire du théâtre avec des troupes locales et, pour se faire de l'argent de poche, vend des dessins humoristiques aux journaux. En 1949, il s'inscrit à l'université de San Francisco. En 1951, il a ensuite fréquenté l'Université de Washington où il a rencontré sa future femme, Nancy Wilner, qui était son professeur d'art dramatique. Il aura avec elle 3 fils : Joshua (1961), Jason (1962) et Joseph (1963) et une fille, Rachel (1964). Il est aussi allé à l'Université de Californie à Berkeley.
Robert monte sur les planches en 1951 et on le voit dans de nombreuses pièces.Mais c'est la télévision qui le fera connaître au grand public. Il y apparaît pour la première fois en mars 1956 dans l'épisode "The Chevigny Man" de l'émission Star Tonight. Sa carrière démarre en flèche. En 1964, il est déjà l'un des acteurs les mieux payés de la télévision américaine. l'année suivante, il commence Les Espions dont il partage la vedette avec Bill Cosby. Cette série dans laquelle ils incarnent un joueur de tennis et son entraîneur oeuvrant pour les services secrets, va connaître un énorme succès. En 1967, Robert Culp divorce de Nancy et épouse France Nuyen (Les Espions) dont il se sépare en 1969. Il épouse ensuite Sheila Sullivan dont il divorcera également. As early as 14 years old, Robert began playing theatre with local companies, to get pocket money, sold cartoons to newspapers. In 1949, he went to the University of San Francisco. In 1951, he then went to the University of Washington where he met his future wife Nancy Wilner, who was his drama teacher.
